Visual (ME)dia

By Samantha Hernandez

Mr. Martinez's portfolio art class is one where students are prompted to see everyday objects-such as string and wood-beyond their typical use and create unimaginable art. With his mentorship Blanca Serrano has found her passion for architecture and a prospective career as an architectural missionary. Like with all students, Mr. Martinez and Blanca form a constructive relationship where he challenges her skills to create new ones and through his authenticity and non-judgmental spirit, creates an environment where students can be vulnerable with their art.

I would like to express my gratitude to Blanca, Mr. Martinez and the rest of the visual arts department for giving me a peek inside the artistic process. I leave with the knowledge that when you have a mentor who believes in you, the possibilities of your growth are endless and the friendships that they allow you to form are priceless.
